I’m the only girl in my family. I was the baby for nine years before my little brother was born, giving me a total of three brothers. So you won’t find it hard to believe that I was a major Daddy’s girl. So back when Corley was born I just knew that she would be a Daddy’s girl. In fact, I kind of had it in my head that if you’re a girl then you’re a Daddy’s girl and if you’re a boy then you’re a Mama’s boy. I honestly never thought it a possibility to have a Mama’s girl.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I get the whole “friends with your mom” thing. And I love my mom and I am VERY thankful for the example she is in my life and the friendship that we now share. But the clingy, don’t-want-anyone-but-you kind of relationship I was certain was left for Daddy-daughter and Mama-son.
So imagine my surprise when I began to realize that our daughter was indeed a Mama’s girl.
Corley’s always shown signs of wanting Mama over Daddy, but I honestly just figured it was an eating thing. I really started to notice it a few months back when Corley would start kind of fussing if Joshua would come and give me a hug. I thought she was just wanting in on the attention.
It wasn’t until very recently that it hit me: she does not like him touching me.
If Joshua attempts to hug me, hold my hand, massage my shoulders (hey, it happens from time to time) Corley will whine and scream “no!” and push Joshua away from me and then cling to my leg.
It’s really quite entertaining, and I’ll admit sometimes we provoke her. Especially if she’s sitting, locked in her high chair and can’t do anything about it 😉
But recently it’s become very endearing the way Corley behaves with me. This past week I have been sick with a cold, and being as pregnant as I am it’s really taken a toll on me.
Corley has always seemed to “get it” when her mama isn’t feeling well and if I show any sign of pain, she comes running to my side to hug me and burrow her face in my leg/shoulder/stomach.
So, like I said, this past cold has really taken a toll, which meant that I did some extra napping on the couch while Curious George streamed through Amazon Prime. Corley would play quietly, flip through books, press the “i” key over and over again on her laptop she got for Christmas, mix up a “meal” with her new kitchen toys, or just sit and watch her favorite monkey.
But every now and then she’d come walk over to me on the couch and climb up in the small gap between my belly and the pillows and lay down with me. She’d never sit there long, but I’d embrace her and move her crazy hair out of my face and away from my itching nose only for her to climb back down a few moments later.
And then one time she walked over to me and acted like she was about to climb up, but instead she simply leaned far enough forward to get her face to mine and she gave me a kiss, right on the forehead and then walked away.
Yup, that’s my girl.
My Mama’s girl.
